Morning Glories Vol1

I have to confess that I have enjoyed the previous comics from Nick Spencer, but I doubted on the effect of the first volume of his latest book “Morning Glories”. What I felt about this book was that it possessed an air of been there, done all element to it.

X-Files 30 Days of Night Vol 1 After the 6 issue series of Wildstorm, which was published during the late 2008 and early 2009, many people wondered if there would be another X files comic. But to the surprise of many, Wildstrom announced that it will do a cross over series with IDW’s popular series 30 Days of Night. Although, initially it came to me as a bit of a surprise but after I gave it some thought it seemed a good fit.

Spider-ManXMEN

With the team that created the Spider-Man/X-Men coming back together, there was absolutely no doubt that this one will be a great. Christos Gage no doubt is a great story teller but without the outstanding artwork on Mario Alberti, his books wouldn’t have had the same bite.

So, when Gage decides to give Alberti a run for his money and try to outdo his artwork, the readers are definitely all set for a classic. Such creative rivalry is a great thing in terms of outcome and as long as it is healthy, no one would complain. This book definitely has the best of both, a great story and a superbly done art work.

murder of king tut1

Based on a novel by James Patterson, this comic narrates the tales of ancient Greek civilization. The story primarily revolves around Akhenaten and his struggle for the throne and the challenges. Although this book is based on the novel by Patterson, there is hardly any weightage given to the central character of the novel. Also, this isn’t an absolutely copy of the novel as it omits a lot of sequences from the novel.

Hellcyon Vol1

Hellcyon is the latest offering of Lucas Marangon and at the first glance it definitely looks impressive. However, a more detailed and closer inspection tells a different story altogether. It isn’t as neat as it seemed when you just skim across it.

Marangon definitely has potential and does show some flashes of brilliance. It seems he draws inspiration from several quarters and his style reminds of Otomo’s “Akira” and at the same time it also seems to be influenced by the early school of Ladronn.

fablesHC1Fables have been a very intriguing comic series since it came into the scene in 2002. For those who have missed its earlier issue, there is a great chance for them to get their hands on the reprint which was recently released by Vertigo. The Deluxe Edition is the collection of starting 10 issues of the series. Fables which have been the most acclaimed series of the writer Bill Willingham is one of his favorite creations. X-Men Pixie Strikes Back vol1

The series of “X-Men” begins in a little odd manner with different girls from the new mutants changed into an unrealistic high school setting. It does take a little time for the readers to get into the thick of things. The issue highlights the unique style of the writer who after a recent overlooked stint returns with a more commercialized series.

S.W.O.R.D. Vol. 1

The story of the debut issue of the S.W.O.R.D. is quite different from what its cover has to suggest. Look at the cover. Don’t you get a feeling that that it would be a very serious super agent comic based in space? Well! Guys! This is actually closer to comic books like “She-Hulk” and “Secret Warriors”. Kieron Gillen has done a fabulous job with the humor of the story which appears to be in sync with the drama of the story. However, the work of the artist Steven Sanders in the issue is far from being satisfactory.

Beasts of Burden

Dark Horse comics have come up with an adventurous new series called the Beasts of Burden. The first issue has been written by Evan Dorkin and the art in the issue is a work of Jill Thompson. Although the issue gives an excitement to the readers, it is not a read for all ages. It becomes difficult at times to determine who the characters really are as they disappear even fast than they appear. There is no real logic behind their portrayal and the prime of example of this being the Character of the Shaggy sheepdog. The confusion of the readers at the appearance of this character is even evident in the faces of the other characters of this issue.

The Trojan War Series
by Mighty Hal
Oddly enough, I thought Roy Thomas was dead. The writing and artwork for this series is excellent. I loved the 5 issues -- and thought that the cover for #3 was among the year's best comic covers. But it's unlikely this series will stand the test of time. If it
