Fool’s Gold Vol.1 takes place between the third and fourth season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and being the first act of television episode sets up the plot in a great way without delivering much interest on its own. It creates an intriguing mystery which explains the state of the incoming and outgoing traffic to DS9. Quark who seems to hold the answers does not provide much of a clue. The issue starts in a way that would throw some light on the background of Deep Space 9 for new readers and focuses on two suspicious characters who arrive at the station for unspecified reason.
The opening page of the issue gives readers the feel of a movie which has just began. There are many characters who pass by quickly and readers are allowed to hear a part of their conversations. It also has a shady alien narrating the history of D9 to others. The story then moves on to the point where Captain Sisko is shown feeling apprehensive about the state of things after the sabotage attempt by changeling which happened in the finale of season three. This has Major Kira bringing in to notice the fact that a large number of people have come to the station and have not left.
Sisko arrives at the conclusion that the fact because of which people are not afraid is what is making them stay back. But a visit to Odo reveals that the visitors are actually on the look out of something and in that process they are tearing the station apart. The drawing of Fabio Mantovani has room for improvement and overall the issue does not set a very high standard.
