It is always a case of difference of taste when it comes down to reviewing a book. For me it is the Mad Hatter edition, simply due to Bill Sienkiewicz. Although, Bill doesn’t do the art himself, he is able to leave a mark with this book and is largely successful in giving it his personal touch. Landry Walker’s writing is impressive and these two together offer us quite a bit of entertainment. Keith Giffen’s art is absolutely wonderful and he works well with Bill to create a great Mad Hatter story.
It is sheer pleasure to see these geniuses come together and they have crafted it so well that you are kind of confused if they ate portraying restraint and freedom. Giffen’s artwork is very impressive-strong and basic; especially the layouts and the pencil work. On the other hand Bill’s sketchy work adds that extra bit of madness to the plot and together they create a riveting experience.
These two artists aren’t exactly fighting with each other in terms of creativity but are definitely moving in opposite directions and perhaps this has done a great deal of benefit overall. It normally happens that when two great artists work together there could be some creative conflict that could lead to disruption to the larger plot, but here although they showcase their personal flair the connection is there.
I have to confess that reading this book has been a great experience and to witness such great artist at work is pleasure in itself.
