The story of the debut issue of the S.W.O.R.D. is quite different from what its cover has to suggest. Look at the cover. Don’t you get a feeling that that it would be a very serious super agent comic based in space? Well! Guys! This is actually closer to comic books like “She-Hulk” and “Secret Warriors”. Kieron Gillen has done a fabulous job with the humor of the story which appears to be in sync with the drama of the story. However, the work of the artist Steven Sanders in the issue is far from being satisfactory.
The wild gesticulations with which he has come up on every page really hams up the issue from creating any realistic feel of any sort. The overall style of Cathy Guisewite looks very cartoonish and the Beast drawn by him appears no where close to the furry feline that has been portrayed on the cover. The cover of the issue which has been designed by John Cassaday has the typical quality which you all have come to associate with Cassaday, although Agent Brand appears to be unusually short on the cover.
The issue also features a short tale drawn by Jamie McKelvie who has been a close associate of Gillen for quite some time now. McKelvie has managed to get a humorous tone on each page and it is a shame that he does not have anything to offer for the main story. Overall, the opening issue published by Marvel seems very lively and Gillen is setting up things up beautifully for the upcoming issues.
