The Umbrella academy is a great comic book written by Gerard Way who is none other than the lead singer of ‘My Chemical Romance’. The first issue of The Umbrella Academy was a great hit and Way has lived up to his reputation in the third issue as well. In this issue Séance has been held by assassins who are actually looking for Number 5, his teammate. There is a great mix of brilliance and insanity in the work of Way and as a storyteller he knows where to draw the line.

The Umbrella Academy is a very strong super-hero story. It also gives us an insight into DNA splicing and famous figures. This issue is all about the origin of Number 5 and what he has been through in his life. Unlike the first issue Apocalypse Suite, this issue does feel out of place at times. However, the issue also gives an idea of how far in advance the writer has plotted the story. Way moves his characters and does not reveal it till this issue which really heightens the tension among the readers.

“The Goon” by Eric Powell was debuted in March 1999. But due to some publication problem the full fledged issues were published by Dark Horse Comics in the year 2003. And now after these many years the Dark Horse Comics have esteemed 2008 as “The Year of The Goon”.

People not familiar with the story line here’s an outline. “The Goon” is an orphan brought up by his aunt Kizzie in a mobile cavalcade. A gangster named Labrazio joins this carnival and kills aunt Kizzie. Now goon punches and whacks Labrrazio’s skull with a rock. The Goon recovers Labrazio’s black book and begins to act as the gangster. But now again there is a twist as a figure comes and alleges to be Labrazio. And hence there is an irony whether to believe him or not.

“The Goon: Fancy Pants” was unveiled in the starting of this year. Powell says that “The monthly storyline that I’m doing for this year pretty much wraps everything up that I started from the very beginning.”

The Goon’s 26th edition is available now.

Oddly enough, I thought Roy Thomas was dead. The writing and artwork for this series is excellent. I loved the 5 issues -- and thought that the cover for #3 was among the year's best comic covers. But it's unlikely this series will stand the test of time. If it
