Written by Haden Blackman with Rick Leonardi and Daniel Green’s art, the story is about an exciting mission of Darth Vader. The book is timed nineteen years early to the Yavin battle and opens with number of character spaces. The task that Vader has to do this time is to find Grand Moff Tarkin’s son who is lost on his own mission. The strong opening of the story starts with an emotionally ripped Darth Vader. This part nicely depicts that Vader still has an emotional being underneath all his sinister black

As soon as the mission starts, the action takes quite a high leap that you would be excited to note. In fact, at one point you will rather seek narration than getting engrossed in the action of gunfire and the running stuff. The portrayal of Vader is depicted as a ruthless general, who knows his job in the battlefield.

The art by Leonardi and Green completely spellbounds you with their accuracy of style. They have genuinely made the action look lifelike. This issue is undoubtedly a marked opening to this case.

So, when he came with his latest issue of the Star Wars, expectations were very high. But to his credit he has managed to come up with another winner. This issue is almost a perfect beginning to a saga of a murderer and his son.

Although a full fledged action story, there has been a considerable amount of focus given to the relationship of a father and a son. The story revolves around the father –son duo and it is not just the story of the two that keeps you hooked on to it but also the inherent complexities of the relationship between a father and a son.

To add to this wonderful father-son story, is the art work, which is absolutely wonderful. Chris Scalf has given it a lot of work and his hard work is reflected in the outcome. The artwork completely compliments the wonderful story.

Scalf’s artwork is not just merely good but is exemplary and can be compared with that of Ralf McQuarrie’ paintings. It is almost at par with McQuarrie, only that Scalf has given more attention to the details. This is perhaps one of the most visually entertaining books published in a long time and when you add to it the wonderful story line it makes for a very good read. Even if there isn’t a movie or TV series made of this comic, this is the best visual extravaganza once can ever witness.

The first issue of this series and this recent issue are interesting. Both the issues are thoughtful and slow in terms of storytelling; however, there is a marked difference in terms of writing as this issue lays more emphasis on writing than art. The first issue was light and hence this issue has been created in a way to offer more drama and plots.

The mission is to retrieve an ancient combat helmet “Melchiorre’s Burgonet”; Abe wakes up a Russian zombie which had boarded the ship to be used in the mission. Everyone on board is taken aback by the presence of the Zombie but Abe manages to keep himself cool and as he studies it carefully, he notices that it didn’t seem hostile. In the meantime a Russian ship approached the area making it even more interesting. Abe shows a lot of character in dealing with the situation and he even shows a lot of passion while defending the zombie.

As the plot thickens, we get a sneak peak to the zombies past and how he started to defend the Burgonet. Although we do get some info on the zombie in the first issue, this issue gives a more detailed version. It is sort of a demonstration how people be randomly facing weird situations.

Apart from the story, just like the previous issue, the artwork is simply outstanding. Dave Stewart and Peter Snejbjerg manage to create something quintessentially beautiful. The character of Abe has been portrayed nicely as he comes across as a calm man and yet when situation arose he showed his furious side.

Hellcyon is the latest offering of Lucas Marangon and at the first glance it definitely looks impressive. However, a more detailed and closer inspection tells a different story altogether. It isn’t as neat as it seemed when you just skim across it.

Marangon definitely has potential and does show some flashes of brilliance. It seems he draws inspiration from several quarters and his style reminds of Otomo’s “Akira” and at the same time it also seems to be influenced by the early school of Ladronn.

Visually speaking this volume of Hellcyon is quite impressive but the overall content seems to have been gathered in bits and pieces from several sci-fi series. The characters do not to add much value to the over all plot, however one much admit that they are unique. The characters do give a sense of mystery but it isn’t projected that ways.

Hellcyon Vol. 1 has been largely inspired by several other hits of the past and Marangon doesn’t really do justice. It could very well have been a classic, but he somehow looses the plot with this one. It is really hard to accept what we get from this one because Marangon does seem to have a vision All through the book you can sense that something fascinating is awaiting, but unfortunately not much is there, except for the visual extravaganza.

There is no doubt that Marangon has talent and Hellcyon could so easily been a masterpiece, but he needs to focus more on content and depth along with the visuals.

The matchup of Aliens vs. Predator was first made available by Dark Horse comics more than two decades ago. It has since been remembered a couple of times and you may also have come across some movies made on this concept. With the possibility of a movie looming large, Dark Horse has decided to relive the clash between these gigantic species. The book in spite of the combined genius of Rick Leonardi and Randy Stradely fails to induce any sort of excitement to the readers.

The suspense which was apparent in the initial issue seems to be lacking in the subsequent issues that have come up over the years. This issue is concerned with the legends of the predators. The predator in this issue wears samurai like armor and focuses more on the kill than in the thrill of hunting. The predator of this issue fails to give a fright and the fact that he has Aliens with him seems rather surprising. The artwork of Leonardi is quite appreciable if you take the whole story into account but does not do much justice to the current issue.

The color work of Dzioba also leaves a lot to be desired. The story has a wonderful plot which would certainly set the future issues alive. Readers can expect some great action between these two species. The series may prove a great comeback for the matchup. Raymond Swanland has also done a fair job with the cover of this issue. Overall, the issue which is available at $3.50 sets up the story beautifully for the upcoming action.

Dark Horse comics have come up with an adventurous new series called the Beasts of Burden. The first issue has been written by Evan Dorkin and the art in the issue is a work of Jill Thompson. Although the issue gives an excitement to the readers, it is not a read for all ages. It becomes difficult at times to determine who the characters really are as they disappear even fast than they appear. There is no real logic behind their portrayal and the prime of example of this being the Character of the Shaggy sheepdog. The confusion of the readers at the appearance of this character is even evident in the faces of the other characters of this issue.

The story of Beasts of Burden though is very compelling and intriguing. The cats and dogs fighting supernatural forces definitely provide an added thrill to the story. However, the lack of much connection between the various characters makes the story go a little flat at times.

The artwork of Jill Thompson can really be appreciated as she has managed to do a commendable job of it. The way she has been able to give the characters emotions and attitude is really quite remarkable. Her choice of leaving the panels unbounded actually helps the pace of the story to a great extent. The story though fails to maintain its seriousness because you must consider it has dogs, cats and frogs that talk. However, it would be interesting to see the response that the issue generates among the comic book lovers.

This issue of the Star War Adventure describes the events which took place a year prior to “The Empire Strikes Back”. The issue is all about Princess Leia and Han Solo who are out on an adventure trip trying to establish a connection with the Rebel Alliance. Leia and Han are out on a secret mission to find out the details of the shipping lanes which is being used by the Imperials which results in the Imperials chasing them down. The story of this issue revolves around this plot.

Jeremy Barlow must be appreciated for the fact that he makes the readers feel this story like one of those from Star Wars. However, it would have been quite different, had it been just Leia in this issue. The other disappointing thing about this issue is the absence of Ord Mantell. The artwork in this issue is done by Soriano, which is also very commendable. It has got a more animated touch to it.

The characters at times, have a resemblance to the Hollywood actors Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher but Soriano has tempered them beautifully to make them look like comic book images that suit the comic book readership. Soriano has not used the backgrounds in the issue to a good effect, although the one used in millennium falcon stands out from the rest. The backgrounds used in the issue are more or less flat color fields which needs a lot to be desired in terms of improvement.

Though, the backgrounds fail to create a Star War like atmosphere, they do add to drama in the action panel. Overall, the dark Horse has done a great job and is set to woo the new fan base.

The Star War Legacy vol.36 is all about space battles and has no Sith, Jedi or pirates to mention. It is mostly about the political and military resistance among the many factions of fleets. Some of the plot points of this issue have been taken from the earlier issues and does not lead us to anything new.

In this issue, Admiral Stazi who leads the new alliance along with former emperor Fel tries to capture some of the ships which belong to the Sith empire. The trouble starts when Admiral Fenel who is sent by emperor Fel starts to control the Sith’s Empire. This eventually results in a split between Stazi and Fenel.

The plot of the story is complicated as it relies on the commanders who decide when and which ship to take out and also capture escape pods and to cut out escape routes. The story is overall very realistic and straightforward. The positions of the ships have also been taken into account as they have not been shown to drift too far from the place where they started.

The issue has some great art work thanks to the lack of action as there is no battle to show off. The issue focuses on the people who are in the command posts regardless of the fact that it is an issue about space battle. It also gives us a good knowledge of the strategies and situations which come across in massive space battles. Although it makes a good read, sporadic readers can afford to give it a miss.
