The legendary comics artist John Severin passed away at his residence in Denver at the age of 90. This brilliant artist has gained worldwide recognition because of his distinctive art. The key element of Severin’s work was his ability to portray illustrative style focusing excellent details with visually appealing cartoons.

The excellent skills of Severin many glorious years when he worked to the perfection for different genres of comics including war, western and humor. He worked as Marvel’s classic artist and with iconic publisher EC Comics.

Severin’s career started with Prize Comics for Crestwood Publications in the late ’40s, where he polished his style on a variety of genres, such as, Western and Romance. His first signature character was the Western hero “American Eagle.”

In mid ’50s, he joined EC Comics published a variety of comics along with their horror genre comics. Here Severin got the chance to sign his own name and develop his unique, detailed style more.

After EC collapsed, Severin joined Marvel, which was at that time known as Atlas Comics. At Marvel, he became the most recognized cartoonist for their many Western titles during late ’50s and the ’60s.

Later the artist worked for “Cracked” in the ’70s and remained as most recognizable cartoonists for the next 20 years. Over the past decade, the kept doing new work or new influence in the comics’ world. Severin also kept contributing often to new comics projects such as in a number of Dark Horse releases.

John Severin leaves behind his wife Michelina and his 6 children. The man also has 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. John’s fans worldwide will miss this comics’ legend greatly.

This April and May, DSI Comedy Theater set out in order to find the funniest comic in North Carolina during the fourth annualCarolina’s Funniest Competition. Last week, the theater actually found its winner in a stand-up comedy first timer.

After the showcase of their best work for about 15 minutes at the DSI Comedy Theater,Chapel Hill’s Brad Schnurr was declared the winner in the house packed theater. Schnurr won $1000 and a slot in the 2012 North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. On the second position came Sherlonda Clarke from Raleigh.

If you are not aware, then let us tell you that Schnurr is a self employed man, who studied theater and started a graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill. DSI Comedy Theater is going on since 12 years and has produced one of the largest comedy festivals on the East Coast.

Organized at the DSI Comedy Theater, this event is attended by about 85 people, as it only has 85 seats. Over a period of time, DSI has spread around the country and has drawn attention from a number of participants who teach the staff.

In addition, the timing of the launch was also well appropriate.

Published by Ape Entertainment, this comic book became a hit with everyone, especially with the children. The story was really good and it has multiple adventure plots. And this is the best part of the book, as it was not confined to one continuous plot throughout. The adventures expanded and contracted the world of Po and the Furious Five.

Moreover, the development of the characters and the plot around Kung Fu Panda is also interesting.

The book is designed well with a full-length main story and three side short stories. Besides, it also has a set of profile pages that features the characters from the world of Kung Fu Panda.

Few stories of the book were specifically meant for the young audiences, however, there are some fun that are meant to serve other readers of all ages.

The lead story is excellent, and Matt Anderson, Len Wallace, Jim Hankins, and Quinn Johnson really did a fabulous job as far as stories are concerned.

The art by Dan Schoening, Christine Larsen, Dario Brizuela, and Chris Houghton has unique style and eye-catching.

Color scheme by Christine Larsen and others namely, Dan Schoening, CV Design, and Diego Rodriguez is also very interesting.

Overall, it’s a must read for all lovers of Kung Fu Panda comics.

Web comics strips are getting popular these days. One of the most interesting fact about the web comics is that they are published without much scrutiny. The web comics has helped people relax by reading these witty and funny strips even during work. Though, the list of such comics is quite long, let us discuss the top 5 of such web comics today.

One of the most liked and read comics in the web is the ‘Garfiled Minus Garfield’ series. Interestingly, this series doesn’t have Garfield, the cat, but has its owner as the main character. Created by Dan Walsh of Ireland, Jon Arbuckle is of a young man who is lonely and talks to his own self while making funny facial expressions.

‘Tootpaste For Dinner’ is another such comics strip that portrays hand drawn characters covering many weird and peculiar issues. This series deals in sarcastic and humor. Moreover, it deals with individual topic each time.

‘Indexed’ is another all time favorite of all. This unique web comic portrays humorous and bizarre topics with graphs, charts and diagram that really make sense and are interesting.

‘User Friendly’ is again a comic strip that focuses on Columbia Internet, an imaginary internet service provider and the day-to-day things in life of the employees of this company. Created by J.D. Frazer, the humor here deals with technology related issues.

The last in our list today is the ‘PHD’ or ‘Piled Higher and Deeper’. This strip mainly talks about graduate students. Created by Jorge Cham, this comics portrays the hazards of student life and the problems they suffer in light humor.

Most of you would agree that Simpsons’ Comic Book Guy is one of the most correct archetypes that one can find within the world of comic books. The surprising thing so far has been the fact that in spite of being such character, he still does not have a comic book of his own. The Comic Book Guy is a sarcastic and skewed reflection of the comic book lovers.

Although, the character may make you think it is a Comic Book Guy comic but it is not the case. The story in this issue is all about filling the void that has been created by his death in the opening issue with the help of the other characters. This is evident from the fact when Marge turns to Android’s Dungeon which makes it similar to a Simpsons comic.

The issue is also much more hilarious than you would have found it on the TV Show which is the case with most of the Simpsons Comics. The cover with all the super heroes and other characters definitely makes it very hilarious and there is no doubt that the audience enjoys it to the fullest. The quality of jokes is quite alright although it may require you to think like the character to understand better.

The story though lacks the much needed focus and just seems to bounce around. However, the comic timing and the great storytelling leaves you without much scope for any complain. It is a good read but could have been much better.

It is always a case of difference of taste when it comes down to reviewing a book. For me it is the Mad Hatter edition, simply due to Bill Sienkiewicz. Although, Bill doesn’t do the art himself, he is able to leave a mark with this book and is largely successful in giving it his personal touch. Landry Walker’s writing is impressive and these two together offer us quite a bit of entertainment. Keith Giffen’s art is absolutely wonderful and he works well with Bill to create a great Mad Hatter story.

It is sheer pleasure to see these geniuses come together and they have crafted it so well that you are kind of confused if they ate portraying restraint and freedom. Giffen’s artwork is very impressive-strong and basic; especially the layouts and the pencil work. On the other hand Bill’s sketchy work adds that extra bit of madness to the plot and together they create a riveting experience.

These two artists aren’t exactly fighting with each other in terms of creativity but are definitely moving in opposite directions and perhaps this has done a great deal of benefit overall. It normally happens that when two great artists work together there could be some creative conflict that could lead to disruption to the larger plot, but here although they showcase their personal flair the connection is there.

I have to confess that reading this book has been a great experience and to witness such great artist at work is pleasure in itself.

This issue of the Muppet Show is really very exciting and is certain to hook a lot of people. Published by the Boom! Studios the comic book has a very attractive cover which would lure even the irregular ones from giving it a try. Readers would find the characters that were destroyed in the earlier mini-series of Muppet Show making a comeback. Roger Langridge has managed to create a very exciting story with careful portrayal of the characters like Gonzo, Fozzie, Statler and Waldorf.

The issue has a lot of wit which may not be comprehended easily by the young readers. Langridge has the known dancing couples and other routine old favorites. Readers would also get to see the marathon prowess of Gonzo Marathon in this issue. The art work of the issue has the typical style of Roger who has done an exceptional job with the characters and makes them look instantly recognizable.

It has a great deal of humor attached to it and specially his sketch of the surprised look in the eyes of the characters and the way he has shown the characters making their way to the theatre in the opening two-pages really needs special mention. He has managed to create a fine looking comic book which is highly recommended for all the fans of “The Muppet Show” and a great way to find out why it is loved so much by the readers. The comic book is priced at just $2.99 and happens to be the funniest comic book that is available in the market.

The story of the debut issue of the S.W.O.R.D. is quite different from what its cover has to suggest. Look at the cover. Don’t you get a feeling that that it would be a very serious super agent comic based in space? Well! Guys! This is actually closer to comic books like “She-Hulk” and “Secret Warriors”. Kieron Gillen has done a fabulous job with the humor of the story which appears to be in sync with the drama of the story. However, the work of the artist Steven Sanders in the issue is far from being satisfactory.

The wild gesticulations with which he has come up on every page really hams up the issue from creating any realistic feel of any sort. The overall style of Cathy Guisewite looks very cartoonish and the Beast drawn by him appears no where close to the furry feline that has been portrayed on the cover. The cover of the issue which has been designed by John Cassaday has the typical quality which you all have come to associate with Cassaday, although Agent Brand appears to be unusually short on the cover.

The issue also features a short tale drawn by Jamie McKelvie who has been a close associate of Gillen for quite some time now. McKelvie has managed to get a humorous tone on each page and it is a shame that he does not have anything to offer for the main story. Overall, the opening issue published by Marvel seems very lively and Gillen is setting up things up beautifully for the upcoming issues.

The readers though had to wait for almost two years for the second issue of the series as Ross Richie the co-founder of the series admitted that there was some problem earlier which they have managed to sort out with the help of the Editor-in-chief, Mark Waid. The issue features a completely redesigned Mr. Stuffins which has been made possible by the wonderful art of Axel Medellin. The issue has been beautifully written where Zach really sounds like a nine year old. Mr. Stuffins also adds to the comedy as it is always hilarious to hear a teddy bear talk like an action hero. Cosby and Stokes managed to show the tough as well as the softer side of Mr. Stuffins.

Another attraction of the issue is watching the teddy bear in action. The story has been amazingly narrated and adds to the thrill in the story. Machain has also done a commendable job when it comes to sketching the expressions of Mr. Stuffins which is guaranteed to make you laugh. Mr. Stuffins is surely one of the funniest comics around and is sure to tickle the funny bone of most of the readers.
